The extension .amsterdam is owned by the City of Amsterdam, thus fulfilling a pioneering role on the internet. The operational tasks have been given in concession to dotAmsterdam B.V. Together, since 2015, they have grown .amsterdam to what it is today.
The launch
In 2015, .amsterdam was launched. With pioneers such as Pride Amsterdam, Port of Amsterdam and of course the Amsterdam Cyclists’ Union, the Amsterdammers were warmed up for the priority phase in which Amsterdam organizations and residents had the first right to their domain name. Supported by a camper bus that visited all events, television advertisements and more, no Amsterdammer could ignore “Geef mij maar .amsterdam. Nearly 12,000 domains have been registered in this priority phase.
Now, .amsterdam is available to everyone, including non-Amsterdammers with a connection to Amsterdam. Yet 80% of the .amsterdam domains are still registered by Amsterdammers.
Creators and hospitality industry, culture and tourism, SMEs, multinationals, self-employed persons and private individuals – all proudly benefit from the possibilities offered by their own domain extension. To show that they’re in the center of the world, because they can get their desired name in .amsterdam or simply because they are Amsterdammer with heart and soul.
